If you love pecan pie and rich chocolate, then you must try this recipe for Chocolate Pecan Pie! I’ve had several requests for this and finally have a recipe to share. You can make this pie using your favorite pie crust, or try one of mine: An all butter pie crust, or an old fashioned crust made with shortening. See notes for recipes. I hope you love it!
This pie has a dark, rich chocolate flavor. If you prefer a lighter chocolate flavor, try using milk chocolate chips instead of dark chocolate. Chocolate Pecan Pie tastes like a combination of dark and fudgy brownies with old fashioned pecan pie. Its rich and delicious! A true chocoholics dream pie.
Tips for browning pie crust: Try using a glass pie pan. I like using glass because you can keep up with how the bottom of the crust is browning. Depending on your oven, you may need to place on a lower rack halfway through baking. If its browning too much on the bottom, move to the middle rack, or a little higher in your oven.

See below for some of my most handy kitchen items. I use the large blending fork all the time. Its great for making flaky pie crust and biscuits. Also, every good baker should have a solid wood rolling pin. JK Adams makes a classic style rolling pin that I love. Its made well and will last a long time. I condition mine with JK Adams natural beeswax. Try to collect different types of pie pans. Standard 9 inch aluminum are great, and I also use my 9.5 inch glass pans quite often. Deep dish pie pans are great for apple pies, and a large oval or rectangle baking dish works well for cobblers. One of my viewers asked for a how-to video for peach cobbler. Chocolate Pecan Pie
Ingredients
- 1 standard unbaked pie shell (see notes for my favorite pie crust recipes)
- 1 1/4 c. roughly chopped pecans
- 1/2 c. chocolate chips (I used dark chocolate, but if you want a lighter chocolate flavor, use milk chocolate chips.)
- 4 Tbsp. butter
- 1 1/2 tsp. instant coffee powder (or espresso powder)
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 c. sugar
- 2 Tbsp. cocoa
- 1/4 tsp. salt (if you're using unsalted butter, make it a heaping quarter tsp. salt)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 c. honey (or corn syrup, or golden syrup)
Instructions
- Prepare 1 standard unbaked pie shell. Set aside.
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- Prepare the filling by roughly chopping the pecans. Set aside. In a bowl, melt the chocolate chips and butter. (melt gently in the microwave, 15 seconds at a time, stirring between each 15 sec., or melt over the stove using a double boiler. Try not to over heat.) Set aside.
- In a small bowl, dissolve the coffee powder and vanilla. Combine with the melted chocolate mixture and set aside.
- In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, cocoa and salt. Add eggs and whisk to combine. Whisk in the honey. Add chocolate mixture and mix well. Stir in pecans.
- Pour into unbaked pie shell and bake at 325 degrees for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. All ovens are different, so baking times can vary. Mine baked slightly longer,...the pie is finished baking when the filling puffs and slightly cracks. (See video for more.)
- Allow to cool completely before serving. Also delicious chilled! Why not add a scoop of ice cream if you really want to go over the top?! Enjoy!
